Give Equal Time to the Lord

Ronald A. Rasband, "Right Before Our Eyes"

"Whatever is on your to-do list, give equal time, not spare time, to the Lord in personal scripture study, family study of Come Follow Me, prayer, Church callings, ministering, partaking of the sacrament, worshipping in the temple, and pondering the things of God."

Disconnect From the World and Connect With Heaven

Be Faithful, Not Faithless
BY STEPHEN W. OWEN Young Men General President

...we must deliberately take time each day to disconnect from the world and connect with heaven....

Regardless of your circumstances, you can make your home the center of gospel learning and living. It simply means taking personal responsibility for your conversion and spiritual growth....

The adversary will try to persuade you that spiritual nourishment isn’t necessary or, more cunningly, that it can wait. He is the master of distraction and author of procrastination. He will bring things to your attention that seem urgent but in reality aren’t that important. He would have you become so “troubled about many things” that you neglect the “one thing [that] is needful.”...

Parents, please build strong relationships with your children. They need more of your time, not less...

Never underestimate the strength that comes from gathering with others who are also trying to be strong....

Whether you are a leader, a neighbor, a quorum member, or simply a fellow Saint, if you have the opportunity to touch the life of a young person, help him or her connect with heaven. Your influence might be exactly the “Church support” that young person needs.

Overwhelmed and Overburdened

Opening Our Hearts to Revelation

From a devotional address given at Brigham Young University on February 14, 2012. For the full text, visit speeches.byu.edu.

We may not know we are doing it, but occasionally we cut ourselves off from divine communication when our hearts become overburdened by the worries, pressures, irritations, and deadlines of daily life. Our hearts can become blocked from the peace and comfort the Lord would give us if we are too troubled and concerned. When we stay up too late and work too hard in order to meet our daily demands, fatigue sets in, we become overtired, and the world looks like a much gloomier place; things get out of perspective and out of proportion.
When you are feeling overwhelmed and overburdened, it seems impossible to slow down, find a quiet space, and draw close to your Heavenly Father. Just the mere suggestion that you carve out some time from your already overscheduled day may increase the sense of pressure you feel....
As with so much in life, what we consume is a choice, so if you spend much of your time consuming one kind of message, don’t be surprised that you become influenced by it. Spending too much of our time with social media, celebrity or entertainment news, games, and the pursuit of online, time-hungry activities constitutes a poor digital diet. When we choose to consume the attitudes and opinions of the mass media, we find our own values and viewpoints following suit. We tell ourselves we’re not being affected by these messages, but that is not possible.

Opportunity Cost of Time

Where Will This Lead?

Wednesday, February 10, 2016

Early to bed, early to rise.

“I counsel our children to do their critical studying in the early hours of the morning when they’re fresh and alert, rather than to fight physical weariness and mental exhaustion at night. I’ve learned the power of the dictum, ‘Early to bed, early to rise.’"

Journal of American College Health, vol. 49, no. 3 (Nov. 2000), 128.

Early hours of the day for your rescue

“To those who feel defeated and downtrodden, look to the early hours of the day for your rescue.”

Russell M. Nelson, “Joy Cometh in the Morning,” Ensign, Nov. 1986, 70.

Use Time Wisely

“Time is one of our most valuable possessions. Use it wisely. Remind yourselves often that things that matter most should not be left to the mercy of things that matter the least.”

O. Leslie Stone, “Making Your Marriage Successful,”Ensign, May 1978, 57.

Put God First

“When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives. Our love of the Lord will govern the claims for our affection, the demands on our time, the interests we pursue, and the order of our priorities.”

Ezra Taft Benson, “The Great Commandment—Love the Lord,” Ensign, May 1988, 4.

Technology Filter Questions

These five filter questions can be a good first step to staying in tune and in balance:
  1. 1.
Am I using this technology to learn or to teach?
  2. 2.
Am I using it to build faith and testimony in myself and others?
  3. 3.
Am I using it to entertain in uplifting ways?
  4. 4.
Am I giving enough undistracted in-person time to family and friends?
  5. 5.
Am I devoting enough time to work, school, Church callings, and physical exercise?

Technology Use

"It takes careful monitoring to make sure we’re not allowing our technology use to numb our minds and consume much of the precious time God has given us."

Jan Pinborough, "Keeping Safe & Balanced in a Google You-Tube Twitter Facebook iEverything World," Ensign, Feb 2012, 20.

Mealtime

President Ezra Taft Benson taught, “Happy conversation, sharing of the day’s plans and activities, and special teaching moments occur at mealtime because mothers and fathers and children work at it.”
Parents can also take advantage of bedtime to increase quality time with their children.
Ezra Taft Benson, To the Mothers in Zion (pamphlet, 1987).

Increase Energy

Communicating with our Father in Heaven while at work is an often-overlooked way to increase energy.... frequent physical exercise increases our stamina and often gives us a boost throughout the day. Peaceful music can soothe the soul. Some people find talking to a friend to be energizing. A short nap is often invigorating. Having a few minutes alone in quiet solitude can rejuvenate the mind.

E. Jeffrey Hill, "Finding Harmony as We Struggle to Juggle," Ensign, Feb 2012, 12.

Savor Every Moment

Life ought to be enjoyed at every stage of experience and should not be hurried to fit an unnatural schedule which you have predetermined but which may not be the Lord’s plan for you at all.
Don’t wait to live. ...
we of all people ought to savor every moment.

Jeffrey R. And Patricia T. Holland, "Some Things We Learned - Together," 3.

Balancing Time

President Gordon B. Hinckley outlined the responsibilities we should consider when allocating and balancing our time to achieve success:

  • A responsibility to our families.
  • A responsibility to our employers.
  • A responsibility to the Lord's work.
  • A responsibility to ourselves.
President Hinckley noted that we must allot time for rest, exercise, recreation, study, meditation, and temple worship in order to be balanced in our lives.

Gordon B. Hinckley, "Rejoicing in the Privilege to Serve," Worldwide Leadership Training Meeting, June 21, 2003, 22-23.
