Christlike Love is a Spiritual gift

Following the Savior’s Example of Empathy and Love

Daniel Becerra
08/08/22

Striving to love as the Savior did can be difficult at times. So how can we love others in the way they need to be loved?

Can we just choose to love, as if there were a switch to turn on?

Is it really possible to love a neighbor or stranger as much as a family member or ourselves?

What about those whom we disagree with or don’t get along with, or those with whom we are prone to argue?

In the scriptures, Christlike love is frequently spoken of as something that a person is “filled” with; in other words, it is something poured into the soul by God (see Mosiah 2:44:12Alma 38:12Moroni 7:48). This means that Christlike love cannot be cultivated without God’s help—it’s a spiritual gift that comes and grows as we “pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart” (Moroni 7:48).

Modest Gifts

Gifts can be part of a cherished tradition, but they can also detract from the simple dignity of the season and distract us from celebrating the birth of our Savior in a meaningful way.
I know from personal experience that the most memorable Christmases can be those that are the most humble. The presents of my childhood were certainly modest by today’s standards. Sometimes I received a mended shirt or a pair of gloves or socks. I remember one special Christmas when my brother gave me a wooden knife he had carved.
It doesn’t take expensive gifts to make Christmas meaningful.

A Generous Fast Offering

“Be liberal in your giving, that you yourselves may grow. … I promise every one of you who will do it that you will increase your own prosperity, both spiritually and temporally.”

The Perfect Gift

Jesus the Christ, who knew perfectly how to give, set for us the pattern for giving. To those whose hearts are heavy with loneliness and sorrow, He brings compassion and comfort. To those whose bodies and minds are afflicted with illness and suffering, He brings love and healing. To those whose souls are burdened with sin, He offers hope, forgiveness, and redemption.

John Weightman

“John Weightman was a successful man whose charities brought him attention and renown. One evening, after perusing a pile of newspaper clippings praising him for his generosity, he picked up hi Bible. Soon he fell asleep after reading the Savior’s words: “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal” (Matthew 6:19).

As he slept, John found himself in “the heavenly city,” traveling with others as they received their mansions. When the Keeper of the Gate stopped in front of a tiny hut built of cast-off materials, he said to John, “This is your mansion.”

John protested, listing his many public contributions.

“Were not all these carefully recorded on earth where they would add to your credit?” asked the Keeper of the Gate. “You have had your reward for them. Would you be paid twice?”

During this Christmas season, I hope each of us has the opportunity to give anonymously.”

Seek the Christ

"Christmas and some of the cherished traditions of the season remind us that we, like the Wise Men of old, should seek the Christ and lay before Him the most precious of gifts: a broken heart, and a contrite spirit. We should offer Him our love. We should give Him our willingness to take upon ourselves Him name and walk in the path of discipleship. We should promise to remember Him always, to emulate His example, and to go about doing good.

"We cannot offer Him the gift of perfection in all things because this is a gift beyond our capacity to give--at least for now. The Lord does not expect that we commit to move mountains. But He does require that we bring as gifts our best efforts to move ourselves, one foot in front of the other, walking in the ways He has prepared and taught."

Gifts on Condition of Obedience

“Just as God has bestowed some gifts on all of His mortal children without requiring their personal obedience to His laws, parents provide many benefits like housing and food even if their children are not in total harmony with all parental requirements. But, following the example of an all-wise and loving Heavenly Father who has given laws and commandments for the benefit of His children, wise parents condition some parental gifts on obedience.”

Gifts and Talents

“For those of us who feel wanting when it comes to talents and gifts, it is encouraging to know that this invitation is not to dazzle others with who we are or what we know. Rather, our light is the Light of the World reflected in us as we simply strive to do as He did. That’s it. The Lord tells us to follow Him and not be ashamed or unwilling to stand out. Do not be ashamed to hold up His light.  Do not be afraid to shine. Do not worry about the outcome….But we must be willing to speak up, stand up, and stand out for the truth….Choose the right regardless of the consequences”

Elder Laurence E. Corbridge, “Valiant in the Testimony of Jesus Christ,” Ensign, Sept 2011, 35-37

What the Lord Asks

Whatever the Lord asks is little in comparison with what He has given and in light of what we receive through our small sacrifices—even redemption, revelation, power, joy, peace, knowledge, confidence, faith, hope, charity, dominions, eternal life, and all the Father has.

Elder Laurence E. Corbridge, “Valiant in the Testimony of Jesus Christ,” Ensign, Sept 2011, 35-37

Our Gift to Him at Christmas

"Considering all that the Savior has done--and still does--for us, what can we do for Him? The greatest gift we could give to the Lord at Christmas, or at any other time, is to keep ourselves unspotted from the world, worthy to attend His holy temple. And His gift to us will be the peace of knowing that we are prepared to meet Him, whenever that time comes....

"Indeed, wise men and women still adore Him."

Elder Russell M. Nelson, From a devotional address delivered at Brigham Young University on December 10, 2002.
