No One Can MAKE Us Offended or Angry - we choose to

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said: “Endowed with agency, you and I are agents, and we primarily are to act and not just be acted upon. To believe that someone or something can make us feel offended, angry, hurt, or bitter diminishes our moral agency and transforms us into objects to be acted upon. As agents, however, you and I have the power to act and to choose how we will respond to an offensive or hurtful situation.”

Refuse to Take Offense

After a rude comment or action, we might feel the need to quickly react, perhaps angrily, or hold in our emotions until we break. How can we step back and remember the Savior?

One idea is to become our own detectives. We can try to understand emotions behind offense. Is there miscommunication? Are we thinking with built-up emotion or a clear head? What are we responding to?...

Though becoming our own detectives may take practice, better understanding the situation and our own emotions can possibly help us to remember the Savior, instead of feeling negative emotions that might draw us further away.

After trying this tactic, sometimes what was said or done is still hurtful. If so, Elder Bednar says: “Our first obligation is to refuse to take offense and then communicate privately, honestly, and directly with that individual. Such an approach invites inspiration from the Holy Ghost and permits misperceptions to be clarified and true intent to be understood.”

“The Time to Stop Being Offended Is Now”

Triumph Over Offense

Elder Bednar teaches that “through the strengthening power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, you and I can be blessed to avoid and triumph over offense.”

Clinging or Holding Fast

Clinging or Holding Fast

Lehi saw those who were “pressing forward … clinging to the rod of iron” and those who “did press their way forward, continually holding fast to the rod of iron” (1 Nephi 8:24, 30; emphasis added).

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles noted that three groups started on the path, but only two groups held on to the iron rod:

“[The second group] also had the added blessing of the rod of iron, and they were clinging to it! … Clinging to the rod of iron suggests to me only occasional ‘bursts’ of study or irregular dipping rather than consistent, ongoing immersion in the word of God. …

“The third group also pressed forward with faith and conviction; however, there is no indication that they wandered off. … Perhaps this third group of people consistently read and studied and searched the scriptures. … This is the group you and I should strive to join.”1

Are we “dippers” or “divers” when it comes to experiencing the word of God? Although both dippers and divers get wet, divers have a more immersive and consistent experience that can bring ongoing enjoyment.

Is It the Spirit or My Own Thoughts?

Is It the Spirit or My Own Thoughts?

“All good emanates from Christ [see Moroni 7:12–13, 16]. So if you have a thought to do something good, it’s prompted by the Holy Ghost.”

Constant Vigilance

Watchful unto Prayer Continually (Alma 34:39; Moroni 6:4; Luke 21:36)
BY ELDER DAVID A. BEDNAR Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

...spiritual complacency and casualness make us vulnerable to the advances of the adversary. Spiritual thoughtlessness invites great danger into our lives....

Constant vigilance is required to counteract complacency and casualness. To be vigilant is the state or action of keeping careful watch for possible danger or difficulties. And keeping watch denotes the act of staying awake to guard and protect. Spiritually speaking, we need to stay awake and be alert to the promptings of the Holy Ghost and the signals that come from the Lord’s watchmen on the towers....

Focusing our lives in and on the Savior and His gospel enables us to overcome the tendency of the natural man to be spiritually snoozy and lazy.

Ponder

"The word ponder means to consider, contemplate, reflect upon, or think about. Pondering the scriptures, then, is reverent reflecting on the truths experiences, and lessons contained in the standard works. The process of pondering takes time and cannot be forced, hurried, or rushed."

David A. Bednar

Come Unto Christ

"Coming unto Christ is not a single event with a fixed point of beginning of ending; rather , it is a process that develops and deepens during a lifetime. As an initial step in the process, we certainly must obtain knowledge and learn about Jesus and His life, teachings, and ministry. But truly coming unto Him also requires consistent obedience and striving to become like Jesus in our thoughts, motives, communications, and actions. One of the best ways to draw near unto Him and to both learn about and become more like the Lord Jesus Christ is to consistently study the holy scriptures - to daily 'feast upon the words of Christ.' "

What Books are you Reading?

"The standard is clear. If something we think, see, hear, or do distances us from the Holy Ghost, then we should stop thinking, seeing, hearing, or doing that thing. If that which is intended to entertain, for example, alienates us from the Holy Spirit, then certainly that type of entertainment is not for us."
